Green Growth 2050 Hotels eliminating single use plastics

Green Growth 2050 Certified Hotels across the globe are looking to reduce or eliminate single use plastics.

Recently Knai Bang Chatt in Kep, Cambodia stopped using environmentally harmful plastic drinking straws and replaced them with paper alternatives.

Located on the Cambodian coast at Kep, they recognised the destructive nature all forms of single use plastics were having on the local sea life and habitat.  Each day, rubbish washes onto the shore from the local crab market one kilometre down the beach.  Staff collect 3-4 garbage bags full of plastic and styrofoam each day in order to keep the beach clean.  As well as reducing plastic use onsite, Knai Bang Chatt is working with the crab market and local community to educate everyone on sustainable waste practices.

The Minor Hotel Group have recently announced that they too will eliminate plastic drinking straws across their Hotels in Asia from 1st January 2018.

During recent visits to Hotels across Asia and the Middle East, Green Growth 2050 was excited to discover all Minor Hotels are looking to reduce all forms of single use plastics from both front and back of house operations.

While the initial announcement related to Asia, the Hotels in the Maldives, Middle East and elsewhere are not waiting.  They are already exploring alternatives to plastic straws and other forms of plastic used in house.  The Anantara Maldives properties have their paper straws on order, while at Anantara Jabel Aktar in Oman, all forms of single use plastic have already been completely eliminated from the Restaurant buffets.

With an estimated 8.8 million tonnes of plastic ending up in the world’s oceans each year, Green Growth 2050 hotels across the globe are doing their best to help stop this environmental tragedy.
